Minister for Sport to attend Fury match this Friday
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

This Friday evening (30th July), Townsville’s Brolga Park will not only play host to Adelaide United during the Fury’s final pre-season match ahead of the new Hyundai A-League season, but arguably Adelaide's number one supporter, Member for Adelaide and Federal Sports Minister, Kate Ellis MP.

This week has been an important week for Australian football, with FIFA's inspection delegation visiting parts of the country during a fact-finding tour into the nation’s 2022 FIFA World Cup™ bid. Ms Ellis, who continues to play an important role in Australia’s World Cup bid, will be visiting North Queensland’s largest city, Townsville, on Friday and will address the local football community during half time of the Fury’s pre-season match vs Adelaide United (kick-off 7:30pm).

If on 2nd December 2010, Australia are awarded the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup™, then North Queensland, particularly Townsville, will benefit enormously as one of ten host cities throughout Australia. Whilst the region would experience massive economic benefits including improved stadium and training facilities, upgraded infrastructure would deliver a once-in-a-lifetime legacy for the people of North Queensland.

"Australia's bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ is a truly national bid and would be a great boost for football in Townsville and the greater North Queensland region," said Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley.

"As one of Australia's fastest growing football regions, Townsville, as a host city for the FIFA World Cup would leave a legacy that would deliver enormous benefit to the city, to the region and to football in Australia."

“The North Queensland Fury look forward to hosting Kate Ellis MP at our match on Friday and hopefully a healthy attendance at the home of Townsville Football, Brolga Park, will reinforce why North Queensland is ready to welcome the world in 2022," North Queensland Fury FC Chief Executive Rabieh Krayem.

“At grassroots level, more people play football than any other sport in this region and the long term effects of hosting the FIFA World Cup™ will benefit all North Queensland residents and the region’s own Hyundai A-League side, North Queensland Fury.

“Although we hope Ms Ellis has a very enjoyable evening with us on Friday, as an Adelaide United supporter, we can’t promise she’ll like the result.”
